Sharon Gillins, genealogist, and research associate at the Mary Moody Northern Endowment in Galveston, will recount the story of how freedom came to Texas more than 2 ½ years after the effective date of the Emancipation Proclamation and the evolution of the celebrations that followed from 1865 to present day, including efforts to establish Juneteenth as a national holiday.
